Following the events of Half-Life 2: Episode One, Gordon Freeman, along with Alyx Vance, must continue their journey beyond City 17 to a new rebel location to avoid a fierce enemy counterattack that could mean the end of their fight.
Freeman arrives at the vortigaunt lair and along with 2 rebels named Griggs and Sheckley must wait for the other 3 vortigaunts to arrive. While waiting, Gordon and the rebels must defend the base and Alyx in a spectacular fight against a huge swarm of lion ants that violently attacks. Eventually the other 3 vortigaunts arrive to help contain the invasion, and later help keep Alyx stable while Gordon and the vortigaunt who rescued him set out on the path that will lead them to find the cure. The cure consists of an extract from the lion ant guardian, for which Freeman will have to fight inside the ants’ lairs. Gordon and the vortigaunt return triumphant, and, also with Freeman’s help, perform the ritual to cure the young woman. In the middle of this G-Man takes advantage and makes a new appearance, stopping time. In it he explains to Gordon his true plans regarding Alyx, revealing that while he rescued her from Black Mesa, it was not selflessly. G-Man then kneels beside an unconscious Alyx and whispers in her ear that when she sees her father again, he should tell her the following phrase: “Be prepared for unintended consequences.” Alyx awakens recovered from her injuries, apparently with no memory of G-Man, and resumes her journey with Gordon.
