Dolby Atmos is a surround sound reproduction standard that allows the listener to hear this sound in three dimensions, as opposed to its previous standard Dolby Digital, which was developed to offer only two-dimensional sound.

DTS:X is another surround sound codec, similar to Dolby Atmos, but with a fundamental difference: it can work with any type of surround speakers, leaving aside the certification required by Dolby Labs for its Atmos system.

On the other hand, DTS:X uses the free MDA (Multi-Dimensional Audio) platform, as opposed to the Dolby Labs platform, which requires decoder manufacturers to pay the corresponding royalties to the developer of this audio codec.
